Davao is a bustling metropolis in the heart of Southern Mindanao, one of the biggest islands in the Philippines. It is a sprawling city and notably one of the biggest in the world in terms of land area with more than 2,400 square kilometres. It has been dubbed as the "Gateway of Mindanao", being its status as unofficial capital of Mindanao and also as a good hub for travellers wanting to explore the region.

There is a lot of cultural diversity in Davao. Because of this, it is a great source of tribal handicrafts produced by the ethnic tribes that still call the city as its home - the Bagobo, Manobo, Mandaya, T'boli, Mansaka and B'laan tribes. This cultural melting pot is celebrated and displayed in the city's annual fiesta, the Kadayawan. A mardi gras like festivity of street dancing and celebration where the indigenous tribes' dances, costumes, and songs are performed and showcased.

Exploring the city, you can not escape the majestic Mount Apo looming on the horizon. Mt. Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines and quite popular among mountain climbers and trekkers. It is home to the endangered Philippine eagle or more popularly known as monkey-eating eagle and a native wild orchid, the beautiful and dainty waling-waling.

Furthermore, Davao is also known for its white sand beaches on the small islands just off its coast and is easily accessible by banca (out-rigger boat). One of the most famous is a former pearl farm converted into a luxury resort and aptly named Pearl Farm Resort.

All in all, Davao is a great city to explore. It may not be as cosmopolitan as the capital Manila (or as hectic) but it has such rustic charm and the laid back, friendly locals make it a worthwhile trip.
